Parents from remote islands and rural areas are making the journey to Suva to gather supplies for the upcoming school term, driven by limited access to essential educational materials in their home regions.

According to Ramapa Naidu, the Central Division Manager for Post Office Fiji, there has been a notable increase in parents purchasing school supplies. “Especially the exercise books, bags, and sandals. We have a wide range of stationery, and all are selling fast. Our prices are very reasonable, and we’re keeping them at a minimum so customers can benefit,” he highlighted.

Selenia Vurelawa, a mother from Namosi, shared the logistical challenges of this trip. “I travelled from Namosi to do my shopping. It isn’t easy to travel back and forth, so we come early, sometimes spending the whole day shopping because there are different places to buy our school items. From here, we buy the books, and at another store, we need to purchase uniforms and bags,” she explained.

Waisake Tavutavu, a parent from Kadavu, expressed the strain of distance and transport expenses. “I have five children in school, from primary to secondary, and I prepare for their education well in advance. Coming from Kadavu, transport is expensive and limited, so I make sure everything is organized early, including school expenses, boarding costs, and term fees.”

The journeys made by these families emphasize the dedication and sacrifices parents are willing to undertake to ensure their children are adequately prepared for the new school term, showcasing their commitment to education despite the challenges they face. As they gather supplies, these parents not only equip their children for school but also reinforce the importance of education within their communities.
