Rewa’s hopes for the OFC Men’s Champions League 2025 have hit a snag due to registration complications involving three key players: defender Samuela Kautoga, winger James Hoyt, and goalkeeper James Do’oro, who are currently ineligible. This issue arose from a misunderstanding regarding the registration deadlines, exacerbated by a time zone difference between Fiji and the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), which observes New Zealand’s daylight saving time.

Fiji Football Association CEO, Mohammad Yusuf, explained that while the FFA filed the players’ registrations according to Fiji’s local time, the OFC interpreted them as late due to New Zealand’s time zone, indicating that the deadline was missed by a day. Yusuf remarked, “Their registrations were received on time in Fiji, and we proceeded to get the ITCs. But the OFC is following New Zealand time. So what they’re saying is that based on that, the registration application for transfers was on the following day.”

The FFA is currently in discussions with the OFC to find a resolution, stressing that both Fiji and New Zealand follow the same universal time standard, despite differences in daylight saving. A decision from the OFC is expected soon.

If the players’ registrations are denied, Rewa will face a significant setback as they prepare for the tournament, particularly with backup goalkeeper James Do’oro being unavailable, alongside injured player Asivorosi Rabo. This situation leaves the team reliant on Alzar Alam, the only available goalkeeper.

This predicament echoes similar challenges faced by teams in past tournaments and emphasizes the critical need for efficient communication and clarity in the international football regulatory framework. It also highlights the increasing prominence of football in Fiji, as teams endeavor to represent their country with honor. The key decision from the OFC will not only impact Rewa’s immediate plans but also play a vital role in the growth and recognition of Fijian football on a global platform.
