Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga is urging parents to register their children with the Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) Registry before the upcoming school year. He made this appeal during his recent visit to Bua, where he launched BDM services at various locations including the Post Fiji Shop in Kubulau, Wainunu, Lekutu, and Nabouwalu.
Mr. Turaga emphasized the importance of registering every child, highlighting that every child comes from a family unit, which includes a mother and father. He stressed parental responsibility when it comes to official registrations.
The minister noted that the shift to decentralize BDM services was aimed at making the process more accessible. Many parents had failed to register their children due to factors such as ignorance, lack of initiative, or financial constraints. By bringing the services closer to communities, the government intends to alleviate these challenges.
Mr. Turaga pointed out that accurate registration is crucial for effective policy-making, as it allows the government to track demographics, including the number of children and their ages, enabling better planning for resources and services.
With these newly available services within reach in Bua, residents no longer need to travel considerable distances to Savusavu or Labasa for BDM registration.
This initiative represents a significant step toward improving access to essential services, fostering greater awareness among parents, and laying the groundwork for better societal support systems as the government aligns its policies with actual community needs. As more families take part in the registration process, it could lead to enhanced planning and development for the entire population.
