During his term as Head of State, President Wiliame Katonivere emphasized the significance of reflection while attending various events. Speaking at the Judicial Officers Workshop in Nadi over the weekend, the President discussed the developments within the Judiciary sector that he has observed throughout his three-year tenure.

He highlighted the privilege of addressing the gathering, which aimed to share innovations within their field and enhance professional relationships. “The Judiciary is a crucial arm of Government, making it essential for us to periodically reflect on our journey, acknowledging both achievements and challenges,” he stated.

The President noted that reflection enables a critical assessment of decisions and actions, providing an opportunity to strengthen future pathways. He stressed that such discussions ensure decisions are made with insight and intention while serving communities and the nation.

He also called upon the Judicial Officers to consider their roles as vital defenders of the rule of law, acknowledging the significant responsibility that comes with their positions. He urged them to practice integrity and dignity in their work, stating, “It is your duty to uphold the rule of law and assure access to justice for all citizens.”

Katonivere emphasized that impartiality, fairness, and judicial efficiency are fundamental to a democratic society and reiterated the Judiciary’s Vision Statement, which aims for an independent and impartial judicial system. He highlighted the need for accountability in fulfilling this commitment.

In his address, he urged the officers to be cognizant of their decision-making processes, stressing transparency and the importance of maintaining checks and balances to uphold the rule of law and ensure a fair judicial system.

The President encouraged the officers to cultivate collaboration with international partners and regional stakeholders. By leveraging resources and technological advancements, he believed they could enhance their standards and efficiency as a judicial system. He concluded by inspiring the judiciary fraternity to learn from one another and uphold the integrity that defines their profession.
