The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs is actively engaged in redrawing the boundaries for urban villages, as revealed by Permanent Secretary Pita Tagicakirewa during the presentation of the Ministry’s Annual Reports covering the years from 2017 to 2022. This initiative aims to address the unique challenges faced by urban iTaukei communities, which often lack access to essential services and the right to vote in local elections.
Tagicakirewa emphasized the importance of realigning boundaries to ensure fairness and better access to services for these communities. “That committee has met three times already to realign all the boundaries to ensure consistency with provincial, local government, police, and health boundaries,” he noted, indicating ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Rural Development.
In recent efforts, the Ministry has successfully completed the demarcation and gazetting of 24 village boundaries, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing the lives of the iTaukei community in urban settings. The Ministry remains focused on providing necessary support and opportunities for these communities to flourish.
This initiative aligns with other government efforts to strengthen local governance structures and improve the quality of life for indigenous populations, as seen in similar articles focusing on the recognition of traditional leadership roles, educational enhancements, and infrastructure development. The focus on education and youth engagement is pivotal; the government aims to instill native values and languages within school curricula, thereby creating a culturally rich environment while addressing the overall welfare of the citizenry.
As these developments progress, there is hope that the proactive measures taken by the government will lead to cohesive and thriving communities that access the resources they need for a stable and prosperous future.
