The chairman of the Fiji Sugar Corporation, Nitya Reddy, addressed ongoing uncertainties surrounding the Ba Rarawai Mill and condemned the misinformation being spread about the sugar industry. Reddy characterized the exaggerations as a harmful annual practice aimed at unsettling the industry just ahead of the crushing season. He emphasized that the Rarawai Mill is set to operate as planned, reaffirming the readiness of both the workforce and operational preparations.
In light of these assurances, the Sugar Industry Tribunal announced that crushing at Rarawai Mill will officially commence on June 24. The tribunal’s registrar, Timothy Brown, stressed that sugarcane growers in the Rarawai area should begin harvesting and delivering their cane by June 23. This timeline is part of a broader preparation for the upcoming crushing season, which also includes the Lautoka Mill starting operations on June 11 and Labasa Mill on June 17.
Previous discussions highlighted the necessity of collaboration within the sugar sector to address past challenges and improve productivity. The collective efforts of all stakeholders, including the government support seen in allocated funds for improvements, aim to invigorate Fiji’s sugar industry.
Reddy’s statements bring a sense of reassurance to the growers and indicate a pathway forward. With the crushing dates confirmed and operational stability expected, there is hope that this season will foster renewed confidence and productivity within the sugar industry, reinforcing the vital role it plays in the national economy and the livelihoods of many.
