The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition is set to be more than just a sports event. This sentiment was conveyed by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the official launch held at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.
This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug Free Nation through Family, Unity and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai embraced the challenge posed by Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, emphasizing the importance of the forces’ responsibilities and their role in contributing to a better Fiji.
Kalouniwai stated, “It is more than winning or losing; it embodies the spirit we share in the forces, who we are, what we represent, and what we can accomplish for the future of our country.” He mentioned the RFMF’s recent efforts towards reconciliation, aiming to create a progressive path for the military organization.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Police Force is confronting the pressing issue of drug crises impacting communities. Kalouniwai expressed hope that the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl would inspire everyone to maintain high moral standards in fulfilling their duties.
Chew reaffirmed that Nasova is the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl, stating, “The Fiji Police Force is ready and eager to defend the Ratu Sukuna tanoa.” He added a note of caution, reflecting on the inherent suspicion officers must adopt in their line of work.
Last year, the police retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl after a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park, Nadi. Chew reinforced the police’s stance against drugs, highlighting the importance of advocating for a drug-free community.
Since the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa was unveiled in 2022, it has been centered at Nasova. Vodafone Fiji’s Chief Commercial Officer, Salman Khan, remarked that Fiji’s passion for rugby is profound, and this event showcases the disciplined forces competing for more than just a title. He encouraged players to compete with integrity and pride, carrying forward the aspirations of past champions and the hopes of future generations.
The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is set for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with other sporting events beginning that same week.
