A fundraising initiative has been launched by the Blackball Yacht Club in Whangarei, New Zealand, to assist Susui Village in Vanua Balavu, Fiji, in its recovery from the destructive impact of Cyclone Rae. This effort aims to gather funds through the online platform “givealittle,” with a target set at $40,000.
Susui Village, located in the Northern Lau Group, experienced substantial damages from the cyclone, which hit a few months ago. The community’s main plantation, vital for their crops, was devastated, leading to an urgent need for support. Local farmers have begun replanting fast-growing crops such as kumara and cassava; however, they are not expected to yield a harvest for at least five months. Compounding their difficulties, around 75% of the village’s rainwater catchment system was also damaged, which is critical as they prepare for the upcoming dry season.
The Blackball Yacht Club emphasizes that 100% of the raised funds will be allocated towards purchasing and shipping food and construction materials necessary for the repair of the village’s water systems and housing, which have suffered severe damage with roofs and walls torn away.
This effort reflects a growing sense of community and global solidarity in response to natural disasters. Similar initiatives have been observed across Fiji, such as the mobilization of various groups in the Northern Division to assist victims of Cyclone Oscar, showing how communities often come together during tough times. The resilience of villages like Susui is a testament to the strength and determination of their inhabitants to rebuild and recover.
The Blackball Yacht Club’s action not only sustains hope for the affected villagers but also reinforces the importance of collective efforts in disaster recovery, inspiring others to contribute and support those in need.
