Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed a preference for a single-party government over a coalition, emphasizing the benefits of streamlined decision-making in governance. During an interview with FBC News, he acknowledged the complexities he has faced while leading under a coalition and remarked on his hopes for a clear majority in the upcoming general election.

“I would prefer a single-party government, but if that is not possible, then it would depend on whether another party would be willing to come and work with me or with my party,” Rabuka stated, highlighting the uncertain political landscape ahead. This sentiment resonates with members of the People’s Alliance party, as General Secretary Sila Bala remarked, emphasizing that a government with an outright majority would enhance governance efficiency.

The current administration was formed after the last general election, where no party achieved a majority, prompting SODELPA, as the kingmaker, to align with the People’s Alliance and NFP. Rabuka noted that while tensions have arisen within this coalition, the parties have committed to resolving disputes collaboratively, focusing on the interests of the people they serve.

Rabuka’s reflections are not new, as he has previously acknowledged the challenges faced in coalition governance, particularly the pressure of meeting diverse expectations and fulfilling various party manifestos. However, he remains optimistic, suggesting that these challenges can lead to improved cooperation and more effective governance in the long run.

The coalition dynamics are precarious, with ongoing discussions among the parties about future collaborations. The current atmosphere encourages open dialogues, signifying that despite challenges, there is potential for unity and growth to better serve the Fijian populace. As the nation heads towards the next election, the emphasis on partnership and collective responsibility remains vital in navigating the complexities of governance.
