Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has chosen to remain silent regarding his discussions with the Commission of Inquiry (COI) about the suspension of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali. This decision follows a legal opinion confirming that the authority to address such matters rests with the Judicial Services Commission. Rabuka expressed his desire to avoid any implication in situations that could be perceived as an abuse of power.

Despite Malimali being on leave, she continues to vet evidence for the COI, a fact that Rabuka acknowledged by stating, “She is accountable for every word she speaks.” It is clear that he believes her obligations are still intact, regardless of her leave status.

When asked about the possibility of Malimali’s removal, the Prime Minister pointed out that this determination must be made by the Judicial Services Commission, reaffirming his commitment to steering clear of any potential misuse of authority. He stated, “I am not going to be drawn into an issue or area that could amount to an abuse of my power or authority.”

The situation surrounding Malimali underscores ongoing concerns regarding governmental oversight and legal integrity within Fiji. Rabuka has previously emphasized the importance of maintaining the independence of the COI, which plays a critical role in addressing allegations of political interference in FICAC investigations. His commitment to transparency and accountability is vital for rebuilding public trust in government operations.

Rabuka’s approach is consistent with recent governmental developments that promote scrutiny and investigation, thereby signaling his determination to uphold ethical standards. These actions foster a hopeful outlook for a future marked by a transparent and accountable framework of governance in Fiji. The Prime Minister’s efforts reflect a positive step towards reinforcing the integrity of public institutions.
