Former Permanent Secretary to the Office of the Prime Minister, Jioji Kotobalavu, has expressed his strong support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent decision to appoint Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) to key ministerial positions, describing it as a “smart move.” Kotobalavu believes this innovative strategy represents a significant opportunity to enhance the leadership of the People’s Coalition Government, marking a departure from conventional parliamentary practices that typically reserve ministerial roles for members of the ruling party.

Highlighting the legal framework for these appointments, Kotobalavu noted that under Section 92 of the 2013 Constitution, Rabuka possesses the authority to appoint ministers and assistant ministers, including those from the opposition. The members in question have achieved “cross-bench MP” status, a designation approved by the Speaker of Parliament, which allows them to take on these important roles.

Kotobalavu is optimistic about the implications of this reshuffle, anticipating it will lead to improved governance and better service delivery to citizens. He argues that by incorporating opposition members, the People’s Coalition Government can enhance its ability to tackle the diverse needs of the Fijian populace more effectively. This pragmatic decision is expected to reinforce Rabuka’s leadership not only within the government but also in his People’s Alliance party.

Plans accompanying this reshuffle reportedly include appointing Assistant Ministers in critical areas such as Public Works, Justice, and Health, aiming to alleviate some of the Prime Minister’s responsibilities and enhance efficiency within the government structure.

Overall, this development indicates a promising shift towards inclusivity and collaboration across party lines. Kotobalavu’s endorsement reflects the belief that such bipartisan cooperation can foster a more united and effective governance framework, ultimately benefiting the Fijian people as the coalition government moves forward in its term. This proactive approach may pave the way for enhanced public service delivery and improved political relations in Fiji’s landscape.
