Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the reassignment of the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force to fall under his direct oversight. This decision was made following the request of Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, to temporarily step down amid ongoing investigations within the Immigration Department. Under the powers granted to him by Section 92(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, Rabuka has taken this step.
Despite this reassignment, Tikoduadua will retain his position as the Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs. He will continue to receive support from Mason Smith, who remains the Permanent Secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs. These organizational changes will take effect tomorrow.
This move highlights Rabuka’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency within government departments, while also maintaining a stable leadership within the Ministry of Defence. It reflects a proactive approach to governance in Fiji, which could lead to improved oversight and public trust in the handling of sensitive governmental matters.
The reassignment can be seen as a positive step toward addressing any potential issues within the immigration system, ultimately contributing to the betterment of governance in Fiji.
