Vitogo Village has celebrated a significant historic milestone with the official handover of Native Grant 187 by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. This expansive 3,177-acre area, originally acquired by the colonial government in 1926 for the Lautoka Water Supply Catchment, has now been returned to five mataqali from Vitogo, Namoli, and Saru after nearly a century under State ownership.

Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that this handover reflects the Government’s commitment to equity and collaboration with iTaukei landowners. He urged them to use the land wisely to benefit future generations. The ceremony attracted traditional leaders, government officials, and other dignitaries who recognized the importance of this return in empowering iTaukei communities and enhancing local development efforts.

He acknowledged the lengthy wait many had experienced, with some individuals having spent decades in anticipation of this moment. “We honor them; their patience, belief, and perseverance have brought us here today,” Rabuka stated, highlighting the emotional significance of the event.

Josefa Vuniamatana, the Director for Lands, added that the occasion was about much more than just the return of land. It was a reaffirmation of the shared responsibility to protect and empower iTaukei communities for their sustainable growth. The return of Native Grant 187 is a momentous step toward acknowledging Indigenous land rights and fostering local community empowerment, which is essential for ensuring that the land continues to serve both current and future generations effectively.

This landmark event illustrates the government’s determination to respect Indigenous rights and collaborate closely with local landowners for their communities’ prosperity. It signifies hope for ongoing partnerships that prioritize the well-being of local populations and underline the value of their ancestral lands.
