Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has firmly rejected criticisms suggesting that President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu is “unfit” for his presidential responsibilities. The controversy emerged following the opening of the 2025 Parliament session, during which Ratu Naiqama appeared to struggle physically, leading to concerns about his health. Critics voiced their opinions on social media and through political commentary, questioning Ratu Naiqama’s capability to fulfill his duties.

In response to these claims, Rabuka challenged those expressing concerns to formally substantiate their allegations through the constitutional provisions. He referenced Section 26(3)(a) of the 2013 Constitution, which safeguards against discrimination based on various attributes including health status. Rabuka stated, “Currently, I have no reasons to institute a medical board because he is performing as expected.”

Additionally, he pointed out that determining a president’s fitness for duty must be carried out by a medical board if necessary, as outlined in Section 89 of the Constitution, which discusses the process for removing a president based on alleged inability to perform office functions.

The Prime Minister emphasized Ratu Naiqama’s qualifications, aligning his capacities as a respected leader with constitutional requirements. Rabuka’s defense of Ratu Naiqama is underscored by reference to his extensive background as a paramount chief and his academic achievements, including a Master’s Degree in International Development from Clark University in Massachusetts and expertise in land valuation and administration.

The upcoming Special Parliamentary Sitting on October 31, which aims to confirm Ratu Naiqama’s position, highlights the broader commitment to ensuring a stable and unified leadership for Fiji.

With the Parliament’s support, there is hope that Ratu Naiqama’s presidency can bring a renewed focus on stability, unity, and national progress, turning this challenging moment into an opportunity for growth and continued governance for the people of Fiji.
