Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima has announced plans to assist Rabi Island in the Northern Division with the restoration of its water supply, which has been disrupted due to damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Rae. The island’s water piping system, which relies on a river, suffered significant damage during the cyclone.
“I have been in constant contact with the Rabi Island Council and am aware of the water disruption situation on the island since Monday,” Mr. Rainima stated. He emphasized that the efforts will ensure that residents, schools, and the health center regain access to drinking water.
The water disruption has impacted approximately 5,000 islanders across four villages and settlements, according to Rabi Island Council administrator Iakoba Jacob Karutake. While some progress has been made, with certain areas restoring water supply, he noted that substantial work still lies ahead to fully resolve the situation.
In addition to water supply issues, Tropical Cyclone Rae also inflicted damage on infrastructure throughout Rabi, affecting roads and foot crossings. The effects of the cyclone’s heavy rainfall have complicated recovery efforts, although local officials and the community continue to engage in clean-up operations.
This response mirrors initiatives seen in other areas impacted by the cyclone, highlighting the collaborative efforts of local authorities and community members in recovery. Previous reports indicate a sense of resilience in communities as they come together post-disaster, especially in the Northern Division. The government is mobilizing resources for broader recovery efforts, including agricultural support, and is focusing on enhancing infrastructure to ensure a swift recovery.
Despite the challenges, the combined commitment to restoring essential services and revitalizing communities reflects hope for a quicker return to normalcy across the affected regions. The community’s resilience and collaborative spirit during these difficult times serve as a testament to their determination to overcome adversity.
