Kinisimere Senikuta, a former midwife at Ra Maternity Hospital, proudly highlighted the facility’s impressive safety record, having seen no fatalities among mothers or babies during her 16 years of service. This achievement contributes to the hospital’s ongoing appeal, drawing families from across Ra Province, particularly as it celebrates 55 years of dedicated service.

Since its establishment in 1970 as the Navuninitu Catholic Maternity Unit, the hospital has evolved significantly, growing from a modest seven-bed unit to now delivering approximately 20 babies each month. The hospital’s low admission and delivery fee of $30 provides mothers with comprehensive care, including essentials such as gowns, baby clothing, diapers, wipes, and soap—all supplied until discharge.

Colleen Wilson, the chief nursing and midwifery officer, noted that the hospital’s growth reflects a solid foundation laid by the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary. The facility’s commitment to the community earned it the prestigious Baby Friendly Hospital Award, which recognizes its dedication to supporting new mothers and infants.

Relief charge nurse Isoa Natui emphasized the crucial collaboration between the Roman Catholic Church, which owns the hospital, and the Ministry of Health, responsible for staffing. This partnership has been vital in ensuring the hospital’s continued success and longevity. “Working together, we’ve come this far, and I know we can reach another 55 years,” Natui remarked, expressing optimism for the future.

With its focus on affordability, community access, and a longstanding reputation for safety, Ra Maternity Hospital remains a vital resource for families throughout the province, committed to nurturing both mothers and their newborns.
