The Queen Victoria School Old Boys (QVSOB) rugby team is focused on mastering the basics as they prepare for a challenging season with the Suva Rugby Union. Assistant coach and former Flying Fijian Kini Murimurivalu stressed the importance of unity and adherence to fundamental strategies during training to achieve success on the field.

In their opening match against the defending champions Police Blue, QVSOB narrowly lost 21-22 at Buckhurst Park. Despite the defeat, Murimurivalu remains optimistic, reminding players that victories stem from teamwork and the application of skills honed in practice. He noted, “A win can only come if there is unity within the team and if they apply the little things we teach them during training.”

However, the team has encountered challenges related to low participation numbers, as members are not compensated for their efforts. Despite this hurdle, Murimurivalu expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt and emphasized the importance of understanding roles and responsibilities on the field.

Encouragingly, he addressed the players with a motivational message, stating, “Nothing is difficult; when you know what is expected of you on the field, the easier things become.” This approach aims to reinforce the players’ commitment and discipline as they move forward in the season.

The QVSOB’s focus on solid fundamentals and teamwork reflects a broader theme in rugby culture, where perseverance and strategy are key to overcoming challenges. By emphasizing these values, the team is not only preparing for upcoming matches but also fostering a spirit of resilience that can lead to future successes.
