PUBLIC consultations are set to commence regarding the proposed multi-million dollar Waste to Energy power plant at Vuda Point in Lautoka. This ambitious project is spearheaded by The Next Generation Fiji Holdings Pte Ltd and has the support of the government, aiming to transform waste from landfills across Fiji into renewable energy.

Ian Malouf, an Australian businessman and investor in TNG, emphasized the project’s potential benefits for the entire nation. “This is a power plant that turns waste into biofuel and we are looking at a long-term solution to Fiji’s waste management issue,” he stated. Malouf highlighted that groundwork for the project began in July of last year, leading to this critical moment where community feedback is sought.

The consultations will kick off on January 15 in Lautoka, providing an opportunity for the public to engage and learn more about the power plant and its objectives. “We encourage the public to come out in numbers to not only understand what we are trying to do but also to provide their feedback,” he added.

Malouf also noted that the venture is a collaboration of local and international companies, with a call for further local participation. “It’s crucial that local companies are involved in this project as it will greatly benefit the Fijian people,” he remarked. Furthermore, he announced that five percent of the profits generated from the power plant will be allocated to charitable initiatives, reinforcing the project’s commitment to community betterment.

The initiative not only seeks to address waste management solutions but also aims to foster local engagement and contribute to the sustainable development of Fiji, marking a hopeful step towards a greener future.
