Christopher Pryde, the Director of Public Prosecutions, has declared that he will not return to Fiji to resume his position until the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) lifts what he describes as an “unjustifiable threat” against him. His statement was released through the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, expressing concerns that he might face suspension again if he takes up his role in Suva as scheduled.
Mr. Pryde indicated that he reached out to the Chief Justice on January 31, 2025, emphasizing his lack of response from the JSC regarding his previous inquiries. He has requested an extension of his leave until the JSC provides clarity on whether they intend to recommend his suspension to the President, which would further disrupt his employment.
He elaborated on the uncertainty he feels, stating that it is unreasonable to be expected to fulfill his duties amid the looming threat of suspension, which he likened to the “sword of Damocles.” In his absence, Mr. Pryde has entrusted his responsibilities to Assistant DPP Pauline Madanavosa, maintaining regular communication to ensure the office functions smoothly during this period.
In light of these circumstances, it is crucial for the JSC to provide a timely response to alleviate the concerns of Mr. Pryde and restore stability to the prosecution office. The situation underscores the challenges faced by public officials in Fiji, yet also highlights the importance of effective communication between the judiciary and public service entities.
Overall, while the challenges are significant, the competent management of the office by Ms. Madanavosa may serve as a promising sign of continued operations until a resolution is reached.
