Christopher Pryde has officially announced his intention to resume his role as Fiji’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on January 20, following his suspension being lifted due to a favorable ruling from a tribunal. The three-member tribunal unanimously concluded that the allegations of misconduct against him were unfounded and recommended his reinstatement to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.
The tribunal’s findings were submitted to the President on December 23, 2024, highlighting significant jurisprudence regarding the previously undefined term “misbehavior” in Fiji’s Constitution. This clarification is expected to enhance the procedures for handling complaints against judicial officers and contribute to accountability within Fiji’s legal system.
As part of his reinstatement, Pryde’s original employment agreement with the Fijian government, established on September 4, 2019, is going back into effect, along with an immediate repayment of any unpaid salary and benefits accrued during his suspension, which began on April 13, 2023. To facilitate a smooth transition back to office, Pryde will report to the Chairperson of the Judicial Services Commission to reclaim all necessary official items, including laptops and mobile phones.
