Christopher Pryde, the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, has reacted strongly to allegations made by Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo, who accused him of embezzling taxpayers’ money. In a public statement, Pryde asserted that Temo’s remarks were defamatory and warranted a response.

Pryde highlighted that on October 7, 2024, the Chief Registrar, acting on behalf of the Judicial Services Commission, extended a settlement offer to him. However, he declined this settlement, insisting on a formal exoneration from the President. Upon his refusal, the offer was rescinded. He contended that if Temo truly believed him to be guilty of theft, it was his obligation to involve law enforcement or refer the matter to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) rather than dishing out money to avoid a Tribunal hearing.

Moreover, Pryde criticized the Tribunal’s decision to proceed with the hearing in his absence, arguing that it infracted his rights to fair administrative practices as guaranteed by the constitution. He added that this action contradicted the President’s directive for fairness, as well as contravening international labor agreements that Fiji has ratified. He received support on this stance from the Fiji Law Society.

Pryde’s defense illustrates the complexities and challenges within the justice system, emphasizing the importance of due process and fair treatment. This situation not only draws attention to the specific legal proceedings but also highlights wider issues related to governance and accountability in public office. It remains hopeful that this conflict may pave the way for greater transparency and adherence to legal standards within the judicial framework.

Overall, this dispute encapsulates a significant moment in Fiji’s legal landscape, showcasing the need for clear, fair, and just processes for all individuals within the system.
