Proud Parents Celebrate Daughter’s Dux Achievement in Education Transformation

Waqasaqa Votuwale has expressed immense joy as he celebrates his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, being awarded dux at Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. The 18-year-old excelled in her Year 13 annual examination, achieving an outstanding score of 405 out of 500 during the school’s recent prizegiving ceremony.

Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer from Bouma Village in Taveuni, shared the challenges he and his wife faced in prioritizing their children’s education. They made the difficult decision to leave their village to provide their children with better schooling opportunities in Valebasoga, Labasa.

“It wasn’t an easy decision for our family,” Mr. Votuwale explained. As the primary earner, he focused on meeting his children’s educational needs while reflecting on his and his wife’s own struggles, as they did not have the chance to complete secondary education due to financial constraints.

Maraia’s outstanding achievement in her examinations comes as no surprise to her father, who noted her unwavering dedication throughout her studies. She had previously earned the title of dux in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination as well.

With aspirations to become an accountant, Maraia acknowledged the sacrifices her parents made for her education. “As the head girl, I kept reminding myself to set a good example, and that is why I aimed for the dux award,” she stated. She is determined to honor her family’s sacrifices and strive to make them proud.
