Ifereimi Waqacama Vesikula, a 50-year-old father from Namara, Tailevu, expressed pride in his daughter’s accomplishments as she graduated from Fiji National University (FNU) with two certificates in Sports Science—Level 4 and Level 5. Attending the graduation ceremony at Vodafone Arena in Suva, Mr. Vesikula reflected on the journey of supporting his daughter, Mere Drewai Vesikula, who is 21 years old.
Starting her sports journey early, Mere was the only girl on the Tailevu South Under-9 boys’ rugby team during her primary school years. Despite the fears that she might change her focus after high school at Adi Cakobau School, she diligently pursued a career in Sports Science. Her achievement was a testament to her dedication and passion for sports.
Mere credited her success to the unwavering support from her family, especially her mother, who works as a nurse in Australia. Despite facing daily commutes from Tailevu to the Nasinu Campus and occasional financial struggles, she remained focused on her studies. Currently, she is gaining hands-on experience through an attachment with a gym in Nasinu, which is set to conclude this month.
Looking to the future, Mere aspires to be a teacher in Physical Education, Music, and Arts and Crafts. Mr. Vesikula emphasized the significant role parents play in nurturing their children’s dreams, encouraging them to prioritize their children’s aspirations, regardless of the challenges they may face.
This story serves as an inspiring reminder of the importance of support systems in achieving personal and educational goals. It highlights the potential for overcoming challenges through determination and familial support, reflecting a hopeful outlook on the future of young athletes in the community.
