Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran is urging Fijians to report any incidents of elder abuse as part of the observance of World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day. Speaking at a gathering in Rakiraki, she stressed the importance of protecting the elderly, stating they deserve a peaceful and fulfilling existence, especially considering their vulnerability.

“Our elderly are often physically weaker and susceptible to various forms of abuse,” Kiran remarked. She highlighted the detrimental consequences that even minor injuries or financial losses can have on their well-being, as these can lead to missed meals or essential medications. Moreover, emotional isolation and health struggles make the elderly prime targets for exploitation or violence. Tragically, some elderly individuals have even lost their lives due to violent acts, emphasizing the urgent need for community vigilance.

Kiran encouraged citizens to report any suspected abuse, recommending that concerned individuals document their observations, notify the police, consult legal advisors, or reach out to the Department of Social Welfare. She emphasized the availability of resources like the Legal Aid Commission, which provides free legal assistance, and the Empower Pacific toll-free line for further support.

In addition, Wairuku advisor Urmila Prasad echoed the sentiments shared on this crucial observance, reminding the community of the need to care for elders. “Many of our elders are being neglected, and we must remember that they play a vital role in our community,” she noted, urging people to act against any form of abuse.

This message is resonant within the broader context of recent discussions among Fijian leaders, underscoring the rise of elder neglect, with Minister Kiran previously addressing these critical issues. Similar calls for action were made by Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa, who has highlighted the concerning statistics related to elder abuse, which suggest that one in six individuals aged 60 and over suffers from some type of mistreatment.

The ongoing efforts to raise awareness and enact supportive measures illustrate a collective commitment to improving the lives of elderly citizens in Fiji. By fostering community involvement and a culture of respect, there is hope for lasting change that prioritizes the safety, dignity, and quality of life for all seniors.

In conclusion, as Fiji navigates these challenges, the importance of communal responsibility towards protecting vulnerable elders cannot be overstated. Such initiatives not only protect senior citizens but also strengthen societal bonds, creating a nurturing environment where everyone can thrive.
