Donald Trump’s connections to the Heritage Foundation are becoming increasingly evident, particularly in relation to their extensive 900-page document that outlines the conservative vision for the United States. Despite publicly distancing himself from it, Trump’s influence remains significant, especially with his running mate, JD Vance, also linked to the organization responsible for this manifesto.
The Heritage Foundation has introduced a proposed “presidential transition project” known as Project 2025. They describe it as a coordinated effort by the conservative movement to ensure readiness for the next conservative administration on January 20, 2025.
The comprehensive 922-page “Mandate for Leadership,” released in early 2023, details a strategy aimed at reshaping the federal government. Produced by over 100 contributors, this document has garnered attention for several noteworthy recommendations.
Key proposals from Project 2025 include making pornography illegal, dismantling the US Department of Education and the Department of Homeland Security, viewing abortion as non-medical, and eliminating climate safeguards.
Project 2025 encompasses four main initiatives: creating a database of conservative-friendly job candidates, launching a “Presidential Administration Academy,” providing a guide for the first 180 days of the incoming president, and outlining modifications to government agencies.
The project emphasizes the need for robust use of executive powers, including reinstating “Schedule F,” an executive order from the Trump administration allowing the dismissal of civil servants deemed disloyal, potentially affecting tens of thousands of employees.
One of the long-term conservative goals featured in the plan is the abolition of the Department of Education. Similarly, it proposes the elimination of the Department of Homeland Security, criticizing it for perceived leftist influences.
The manifesto strongly advocates for outlawing pornography, declaring that those producing or distributing it should face jail time and that companies sharing such content could face legal repercussions. Furthermore, it characterizes transgender care for minors as “child abuse” and associates “transgender ideology” with pornography.
The plan also calls for the reversal of the abortion drug mifepristone’s approval and aims to exempt men’s contraceptives and Plan B from Affordable Care Act mandates. While not outright banning abortion, many recommendations would restrict access considerably.
In matters of environmental policy, Project 2025 urges increased production of natural gas and oil while reversing climate change efforts and associated regulations. It even targets the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, labeling it a proponent of climate change alarmism and suggesting its dismantlement.
On immigration, the proposals include mass deportations and employing active military personnel at the southern border. Moreover, it seeks to eliminate terms related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and diversity from federal regulations and legislation.
As US politics evolves, implications for international observers, including those in Fiji, remain to be seen. The potential consequences of reversing environmental actions prompt questions about the United States’ global role and environmental commitment.
