For Mereoni Care, raising a child on the autism spectrum has brought both challenges and enriching experiences. She recently witnessed her child participate in the Beacon Learning Centre’s Autism and Kindergarten “Fruitsy Whimsy” event, which aims to foster inclusion and acceptance among young children.
Mereoni reflects on the journey of parenting a child with autism, noting that it is filled with surprises and remarkable abilities. She appreciates the unique perspectives and talents that children on the spectrum often bring into the world. “There are a lot of surprises that they bring into this world. They are very artistic, they are very skilled in what they do, and they have an extra ability to do things in their own way,” she stated.
Events such as the “Fruitsy Whimsy” create vital opportunities for children on the spectrum to interact freely and develop friendships with their peers. According to Mereoni, these inclusive settings allow children to feel accepted, safe, and respected. She believes that these experiences enhance their social skills and foster a sense of community among kids, emphasizing that when children grow together, they all benefit.
Beacon Learning Centre teacher Romeo Matakibau echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of early inclusion. He explained that integrating children with special needs into mainstream environments teaches all kids how to support one another. “It’s very important for us to include our autistic children in our kindergarten so that when they grow up and see someone with special needs, they will know how to help and include them in the society, to include them in the community,” he said.
By nurturing understanding and acceptance from a young age, inclusive educational practices pave the way for a more compassionate and diverse community. The collaborative efforts of parents, educators, and peers are essential in fostering a future where all children, regardless of their challenges, can thrive and feel valued.
