The Deputy Commissioner of Corrections, Auta Moceisuva, has lost the chance to act as Commissioner of Corrections following the suspension of Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa. Instead, the Acting Commissioner will be Assistant Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi, who holds a junior rank compared to Moceisuva.
Dr. Nakarawa’s suspension comes after the Constitutional Officers Commission decided to investigate serious complaints against him, ensuring that he receives his full entitlements during this period. The Commission emphasized that this appointment aligns with section 133(g) of the Constitution and is necessary to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of the Fiji Corrections Service while the investigation and tribunal proceedings are pending.
This situation is reminiscent of ongoing challenges within the Fiji Corrections Service, highlighted by a previous investigation announced by Justice Minister Siromi Turaga regarding serious allegations of misconduct under Dr. Nakarawa’s leadership. The ministry is focused on reinforcing good governance, transparency, and public trust within the corrections system. With the ongoing investigations, there is hope that this process could lead to significant reforms, addressing potential systemic issues and ultimately enriching the operational standards within the Fiji Corrections Service.
