Post Fiji PTE Limited is in the process of revising and updating the Postal Act, acknowledging that the current legislation is outdated and not suitable for modern, digital, and security-conscious operations. Chief Executive Isaac Mow emphasizes that the existing Postal Act of 1989 fails to adequately address contemporary challenges in postal services, logistics, and cybersecurity, particularly in light of rising risks associated with drug trafficking and the evolution of criminal tactics.
Mow highlighted the importance of strengthening the legislative framework to bolster Post Fiji’s security measures. He pointed out that several provisions of the current legislation have become impractical or unenforceable over time. For instance, the act stipulates that packages weighing less than 2kg should exclusively be transported by Post Fiji. However, this rule is not being enforced, as various courier and logistics companies in Fiji are now carrying these smaller parcels, which undermines Post Fiji’s business and revenue.
By updating the Postal Act, Mow believes it will create a more equitable environment, enhance regulatory oversight, and significantly support Post Fiji’s efforts in a competitive market. The organization is committed to modernizing its operations to adapt to changing industry dynamics and to better serve its customers. This proactive approach reflects the company’s dedication to maintaining relevance and ensuring a secure postal service in an increasingly digital landscape.
