Opposition Member of Parliament Mosese Bulitavu has stated that former FijiFirst MPs believe the downfall of former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was significantly influenced by former Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. In response to Bloc 16 and Opposition MP Jone Usamate’s recent remarks labeling Sayed-Khaiyum a hypocrite, Bulitavu emphasized that the G16 in Parliament appears to harbor animosity towards Sayed-Khaiyum and seeks to avoid any political association with him.
Bulitavu expressed that many senior officials from the previous FijiFirst administration had consistently provided valuable counsel to Bainimarama, but their suggestions were often disregarded by Sayed-Khaiyum. He noted that in the existing Coalition government, individual Ministers have the opportunity to present their Bills, contrasting the previous regime where Sayed-Khaiyum, in his capacity as Attorney-General, dominated the legislative process by proposing all Bills.
He remarked, “Some say it reached a point where Sayed-Khaiyum advised the former Prime Minister to ignore the Military Council.” Bulitavu further commented that the current military leadership is pursuing a strategy of restoration and reconciliation, a path which he alleges Bainimarama rejected due to misguided advice.
He commended Usamate for his role as an independent MP and Opposition Whip, stating that Usamate’s comments represent a collective voice within the group and carry significant weight.
This discourse reflects a critical evaluation of past governance and highlights the ongoing tensions within Fiji’s political landscape, suggesting a potential for growth and unity among political factions moving forward. The acknowledgment of individual contributions by current Ministers indicates a shift towards a more collaborative political environment, which could foster fruitful discussions and improved governance in Fiji.
