Independent MP Premila Kumar is under pressure from Minister for Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu to resign from the Opposition. Bulitavu claims Kumar has failed to support the Leader of the Opposition’s new political movement, which aims to break away from the leadership of Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Frank Bainimarama. He expressed his discontent on social media, asserting that if Kumar cannot endorse the movement, she should step down.

Adding to the criticism, Bulitavu accused Kumar of hypocrisy, pointing out that she voted against a pay increase for Members of Parliament yet has benefited from this increase since it was enacted last August. He directed similar criticisms at Opposition MP Ketan Lal, who is also receiving additional allowances despite previously opposing the salary hike.

Kumar has countered Bulitavu’s claims, insisting they lack substance and are more about political theatrics than genuine concern. She stressed the need for focusing on governance and the performance of the government rather than falling into the trap of political attacks. Kumar highlighted that the current government has not effectively addressed pressing issues facing the citizens.

This exchange between Kumar and Bulitavu underscores the evolving political landscape in Fiji, especially with the impending 2026 General Election. The dissolution of former alliances and the deregistration of the FijiFirst party are creating significant fractures, which could lead to heightened political engagement among voters as they navigate these changes.

While the situation reflects a challenging political environment, it also offers an opportunity for greater public discourse regarding governance and accountability. As different factions strive to redefine their identities and assert their positions, there is hope that this will lead to a more engaged electorate focused on discussions about effective governance and policymaking that prioritizes citizens’ needs.
