Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, has recently claimed that a “voluntary income declaration error was used against him publicly.” His testimony, provided during a Commission of Inquiry, identified Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections and Registrar of Political Parties, as a key figure in this alleged breach. Prasad stated that he was not formally notified about the issue before it was made public and highlighted that his predecessor, Mohammed Saneem, had allowed him to rectify similar discrepancies in the past.

In his testimony, he asserted that there was a political conspiracy targeting him, involving individuals such as Mataiciwa, officials from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), and associates linked to the former Fiji First Party. Prasad pointed out that the details of his income declaration were leaked within 48 hours of submission, causing significant reputational damage. The report from the Commission of Inquiry quoted him as stating, “There are strict rules governing access to such declarations, and the leak was a breach of protocol and confidentiality.”

This situation arises amid ongoing scrutiny of Prasad by opposition figures, especially from the Fiji Labour Party (FLP), which has previously called for accountability regarding similar allegations. FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry has emphasized the public’s demand for transparency and adherence to the rule of law. The discussions ignited by these events underscore the importance of maintaining rigorous standards in financial declarations by public officials, reinforcing the need for trust in governance.

Prasad’s case, while exacerbated by political tensions, serves as a reminder of the vital role transparency plays in public office. The call for clarity regarding declaration protocols continues to resonate among politicians and the public alike, opening a pathway for constructive changes in Fiji’s political landscape.

Overall, this unfolding narrative reflects significant issues regarding transparency, accountability, and the dynamics of political rivalry in Fiji. It is hopeful that such discussions can lead to improved governance practices and heightened public trust in their officials.
