The G16 Group in Parliament has lost one of its members as MP Ketan Lal has decided to withdraw his support for the opposition group led by Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu. Lal announced his choice to serve as an independent MP, a decision he communicated to the Speaker of Parliament, Filimone Jitoko.

In his statement, Mr. Lal expressed that his decision was not made lightly but was essential in aligning with the values he upholds, including integrity, fairness, and independent thinking. He also resigned from his roles as Deputy Whip and Shadow Minister for Justice, both of which were linked to his membership in the G15 opposition group.

While he departs from the G16, Lal emphasized his commitment to remaining on the Opposition bench, stating he would be guided not by political affiliations but by the voices of the people he represents. “I may now walk alone in Parliament, but I walk with the strength of your hopes and dreams behind me,” he asserted, pledging to continue serving his constituents faithfully.

Lal’s exit comes amid broader political realignments in Fiji, particularly following the deregistration of the FijiFirst party. This trend has prompted several former members to reassess their political affiliations, with many opting to remain independent. Lal’s journey embodies a narrative of resilience, reflecting the importance of independent voices in maintaining democratic values and accountability within the government’s actions.

His dedication may foster an environment where constructive debates can thrive, ensuring the public’s voices are heard in the political arena. As political dynamics continue to evolve, independent representatives like Lal could play a crucial role in enhancing governance and responding effectively to the needs of their constituents.
