Opposition MP Mosese Bulitavu has expressed a view held by some former FijiFirst MPs, suggesting that the former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s fall from power can be attributed to the influence of former Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. In response to a statement made by Bloc 16 and Opposition MP Jone Usamate, who labeled Sayed-Khaiyum a hypocrite, Bulitavu emphasized that the Coalition government appears united in their disapproval of Sayed-Khaiyum, preferring to distance themselves politically from him.
Bulitavu remarked that a significant number of the former senior ministers offered constructive advice to Bainimarama but were often disregarded due to Sayed-Khaiyum’s dominating presence in governance. He pointed out that currently, within the Coalition government, ministers have the autonomy to present their own bills, contrasting sharply with the previous administration where Sayed-Khaiyum frequently overshadowed individual ministers by handling all legislative matters himself.
He remarked, “Some say it reached a point where Sayed-Khaiyum advised the former Prime Minister against heeding the Military Council’s counsel.” He praised the new military leadership for opting for a route of restoration and reconciliation, which he claims Bainimarama opposed due to misguided advice. Bulitavu commended Usamate for his readiness to speak up as both an independent MP and as the Opposition Whip, asserting that Usamate’s remarks resonated clearly within the group.
In summary, this commentary reveals tensions within the opposition ranks, highlighting the perceived impact of Sayed-Khaiyum’s influence on the former government and the current efforts towards reconciliation within the military. Such discussions, while revealing rifts, can pave the way for constructive political dialogue and change in the future.
The ongoing political dynamics may present an opportunity for transformation in governance, emphasizing collaboration and shared responsibility among leaders as they navigate a path forward for Fiji.
