A specialized police taskforce has successfully apprehended the primary suspect linked to a series of yaqona thefts on Taveuni. Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, reported that the public’s support was instrumental in the arrest of 24-year-old Josaia Vatu from Komo, Lau, who has family ties to Bouma Village. At the time of the thefts, Vatu was living in Vunibibi Settlement.

In response to the rising incidents of yaqona theft affecting local farmers, a 25-member taskforce was initiated in January, comprising officers from various locations within the Northern Division. Their objective is to identify individuals unlawfully selling stolen yaqona plants.

The issue of yaqona theft has become increasingly alarming, with dedicated farmers losing their livelihoods to criminals. Many farmers have resorted to installing CCTV cameras to enhance their security measures.

A significant 30-day surveillance operation commenced on January 24 and will continue until February 23, focusing on curbing this illegal activity. As part of their strategy, police are advising middlemen to thoroughly verify the source of yaqona before proceeding with any purchases. This initiative aims to foster a partnership with registered buyers to ensure that all acquired plants are legitimate.

Superintendent Soqosoqo issued a stern warning to those involved in the trade—anyone caught buying stolen yaqona without proper verification will face legal consequences. “Anyone purchasing yaqona must prove they are dealing with a legitimate seller,” he stated.

Continuing efforts will be made to enhance police visibility and surveillance, which SP Soqosoqo deems necessary for improving policing operations in Taveuni.

This proactive approach by law enforcement not only aims to protect the livelihoods of local farmers but also promotes a sense of community collaboration to tackle crime effectively. The taskforce’s ongoing commitment underscores the importance of vigilance and verification within agricultural trade, fostering a safer environment for legitimate business practices.

In summary, the combined efforts of law enforcement and community engagement could pave the way for a more secure future for yaqona farmers on Taveuni, reinforcing the values of integrity in local commerce.
