Authorities are ramping up their drug enforcement efforts during the festive season, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu. He emphasized that this strategy comprises a comprehensive approach aimed at dismantling drug syndicates.

Mr. Driu noted that the police are conducting various operations, including both general and covert missions facilitated by their intelligence unit. The focus has expanded beyond residential areas and known suspects to include targeted stops of vehicles and other areas based on intelligence received.

Appreciating the support from local chiefs and the community, Mr. Driu reiterated that the fight against drugs requires a holistic management strategy. He reported a notable decrease in methamphetamine discoveries recently, although marijuana-related incidents have increased.

Last week, law enforcement initiated operations at local borders and wharves, leading to arrests following K9 unit searches of vessels arriving from Kadavu at the Narain Jetty. Mr. Driu observed that while meth findings are down, there has been a spike in marijuana cases over the past month.

In conjunction with community policing initiatives, the police will enhance road operations by setting up checkpoints and roadblocks to monitor and improve driver behavior. Mr. Driu explained that the presence of roadblocks positively influences driver conduct.

This proactive approach from law enforcement not only aims to reduce drug trafficking but also promotes overall community safety, particularly during a time when public gatherings increase. Continued vigilance and cooperative effort between police and community members could lead to more significant successes in fighting drug-related issues.

In summary, the police are committed to intensifying their operations against drug trafficking during the festive season, leveraging community support and intelligence to create a safer environment for everyone.
