A police officer has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison after being convicted of causing the death of a 47-year-old man. Fifita Tawake Toma, who was a first-time offender, received a sentence of five years and 11 months from Justice Thushara Rajasinghe. However, he will be eligible for parole after serving two years and 11 months.

Initially, Toma had pleaded not guilty to a manslaughter charge, but he changed his plea before the trial began. Court documents reveal that on January 13 of this year, Toma was traveling in a car in Suva City with three others after consuming kava. Their vehicle stopped at traffic lights next to the Westpac Bank on Thompson Street at the same moment that Peter Lanyon, the deceased, was crossing the street. Reports indicate that Lanyon punched the car, prompting Toma to exit and punch him in response. Lanyon fell and struck his head on the pavement, leading to him becoming unconscious. In a troubling move, Toma then dragged Lanyon’s body to the opposite side of the road, where police officers found him and transported him to CWM Hospital.

Toma now has 30 days to appeal his sentence.

This case serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of violent actions and the importance of accountability, especially for those in positions of authority. The sentencing reflects the judicial system’s stance on violent behavior, aiming to ensure justice for the victim’s family. It is hoped that this outcome will encourage discussions on responsible conduct, particularly in social situations involving alcohol consumption.

Overall, while the situation is tragic, it is a chance to reflect on community safety and the impact of one’s actions on others.
