An International Women’s Day event held at the Lautoka Girmit Centre faced disruption when a police officer attempted to halt the proceedings, threatening to apprehend one of the organizers. This incident underlines ongoing tensions regarding women’s rights and freedom of expression in Fiji, especially on a day dedicated to celebrating these values.

Pramila Devi, the chair of the event, recounted how the officer tugged at her as he demanded the gathering be dispersed, citing a lack of a permit. Despite his demands, which left many speakers feeling rushed and unable to express their full messages, the assembly of approximately 600 women continued their discussions and celebrations of empowerment.

This gathering, which received sponsorship from the Fiji Girmit Council and the women’s wing of the Fiji Youth and Students Association, ultimately proceeded after Devi and a volunteer visited the Lautoka Police Station to speak with a senior officer, who later allowed the meeting to continue. Devi described the disruption as an affront to women’s rights and freedom of expression, particularly poignant on a day recognized by the United Nations.

The assembled women, including representatives from various organizations, called for unity and empowerment. Speakers emphasized the necessity for women to advocate for their rights, enhance their leadership skills, and engage in adult education programs to improve communication within their communities. This sentiment aligns with trends seen in recent International Women’s Day events across Fiji, where themes of safety, leadership, and empowerment have resonated strongly.

A similar march held in Suva on International Women’s Day demonstrated a growing movement advocating for women’s rights, where participants demanded safer environments and equality. Notable speakers from various women’s organizations also called for strength and solidarity against ongoing challenges faced by women in society.

The ongoing commitment of women in Fiji to assert their rights and advocate for change represents a hopeful and determined stance towards equality and empowerment, reflecting broader global movements striving for women’s dignity and respect. The unity shown at these events signifies a spirit of resilience and the importance of continued advocacy for women’s rights in the face of adversity.
