The PNG Customs Service has partnered with EastWest Transport (EWT) to implement the Trusted Trader Program (TTP), marking a significant advancement in enhancing trade security and efficiency in Papua New Guinea. This Memorandum of Intent (MOI) was signed recently at PNG Customs Headquarters, allowing EWT to become the third freight forwarder involved in the program, following Express Freight Management and Lae Inland Logistics.

The TTP, which aligns with the World Customs Organization’s SAFE Framework of Standards, facilitates a partnership model that recognizes businesses meeting essential security and compliance criteria. Participating companies benefit from expedited customs processes and reduced inspections, leading to lower operational costs.

Chief Commissioner David Towe emphasized that the TTP is designed to enhance trade security while minimizing customs interventions, which can increase the cost of doing business. The program reflects a broader effort by PNG Customs to alleviate the financial burdens faced by businesses amidst rising costs of goods.

Roselyn Tei, Customs Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Procedures, highlighted that the evaluation of EWT’s compliance was rigorous, demonstrating the importance of security standards. EWT’s General Manager, Nicholas Bury, expressed appreciation for the collaboration, underscoring the shared commitment to delivering efficient logistics services and ensuring cost savings for consumers.

This collaboration signifies the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing national trade initiatives. PNG Customs plans to extend the program to include importers and exporters, further streamlining the trading process.

The establishment of the TTP in PNG is a proactive step towards aligning with global trade standards, enhancing the country’s competitiveness in international markets, and exemplifying a commitment to structured and secure trade practices. As PNG continues to integrate with global trade frameworks, the potential for economic growth remains promising.
