The Wellington Phoenix have announced the departure of long-serving striker David Ball, marking the end of his journey with the club after over five years. Both the club and the 35-year-old English forward agreed to mutually terminate the remaining six months of his contract in light of the upcoming A-League transfer window.
During his time with the Phoenix, Ball made a significant impact, racking up 122 appearances and contributing 15 goals and 26 assists. His excellence helped the team reach the finals in four out of five seasons, culminating in being named Player of the Year in 2020 when the club achieved its highest regular-season finish of third place.
However, this season, Ball’s opportunities on the pitch dwindled, with only one appearance as a substitute in the season opener. Coach Giancarlo Italiano’s strategy of prioritizing younger players led to this decision, especially as the Phoenix currently sits at 10th place in the league, having suffered six losses from 11 games.
In expressing his sentiments about leaving, Ball shared the emotional depth of his connection to the club and its supporters, stating, “The Phoenix have been a huge part of mine and my family’s life.” He remains hopeful to continue his playing career, ideally in New Zealand, while also wishing to spend quality time with his family.
Phoenix director of football Shaun Gill lauded Ball as “the ultimate pro,” acknowledging his influence on younger players and his role during challenging times, particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Club captain Alex Rufer also highlighted the leadership and bond he forged with teammates during their shared experiences.
As the Phoenix looks toward the future, this departure opens a new chapter and presents the opportunity to strengthen their squad ahead of the transfer window. This transition inspires optimism among fans, who can cherish Ball’s legacy while looking forward to new talent that may enhance the team’s performance in the coming season. With the potential for fresh signings, the club aims to rebuild and position itself for greater success in the A-League.
