A pastor has been found guilty by the High Court in Lautoka for the rape of his then 15-year-old niece. The court convicted him on multiple charges, including two counts of indecent assault, one count of rape, and one count of sexual assault, all stemming from incidents that took place four years ago between October 27 and 28.

The court documents reveal that the sexual offenses occurred at the pastor’s home in Rakiraki while his wife was away dropping their son at school. Another incident involved the victim asking her uncle for a ride to see her cousin, but instead, he drove her to Lautoka under the pretense of visiting a mechanic. During this time, the mechanic arrived with a case of beer, and while both men were drinking, the victim fell asleep in the vehicle. Upon waking, she discovered her uncle assaulting her. Although the mechanic witnessed the act, he failed to intervene and chose to return to his house. The victim managed to escape by kicking her uncle, rendering him unconscious.

Justice Aruna Aluthge, delivering the ruling on November 11, expressed his lack of confidence in the defense’s arguments, stating, “I am not convinced that the complainant lodged a false report against her uncle.” He noted inconsistencies in the accused’s testimony, indicating that he was merely attempting to protect himself amid serious accusations.

While this case highlights a tragic violation of trust and the failure of those present to act, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of believing and supporting survivors. The judicial system has taken a stance against such heinous actions, urging accountability and justice for victims. This situation may encourage more individuals to come forward and report similar crimes, highlighting the need for community awareness and protection against abuse.
