The election for a new Speaker of Parliament in Fiji is set to take place on December 2, 2024. This follows the official vacancy created by the current Speaker, Tui Cakau, who will transition to the role of President of the Republic of Fiji Islands after a swearing-in ceremony on November 12.

Until November 11, Ratu Naiqama will continue to fulfill the responsibilities of the Speaker. During the upcoming parliamentary session on December 2, both the Government and the Opposition will put forward their nominations for the position, followed by a voting process to select the new Speaker.

This change in leadership offers an opportunity for fresh ideas and perspectives within the Parliament, which can pave the way for enhanced governance and representation in Fiji. The cooperation between the Government and the Opposition in the nomination process reflects a commitment to democratic principles.
