Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has been appointed as the new President of the Republic of Fiji Islands following a parliamentary vote today. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka put forward Ratu Naiqama’s nomination for the prestigious role, while Ratu Meli Tora Tavaiqia was nominated by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu. In the roll call voting, Ratu Naiqama secured 37 votes, while Ratu Meli garnered 16, solidifying his position as the new head of state. Ratu Naiqama is set to be officially sworn into office on November 12, 2024.
