Papua New Guinea nationals residing and working in the Middle East continue to face uncertainty as their identification remains ongoing before seeking assistance from both the Australian government and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Foreign Affairs Secretary Elias Wohengu stressed the importance of relatives and friends of PNG citizens, who are currently stranded, to reach out to the department through its state protocol and consular division.

The escalating crisis in the region has rendered many governments unable to execute any evacuation measures, given that all land borders and airspace are closed, severely restricting movement in and out of the Middle East. Wohengu highlighted the significant risks associated with initiating evacuations under the current volatile circumstances.

Typically, many Papua New Guineans traveling to the Middle East organize their arrangements independently and often do not notify the embassy of their whereabouts. However, he noted that both the Australian government and the UAE are prepared to offer assistance to Papua New Guineans caught in this predicament.

Compounding the situation, recent military actions involving Israel and the United States have targeted significant sites in Iran, leading to critical repercussions, including loss of life and retaliatory strikes on vital oil and natural gas production areas, further complicating air and sea travel.

The situation has necessitated the closure of the PNG embassy in Jerusalem until conditions improve and it is deemed safe to reopen. In light of these events, Wohengu mentioned that regional governments are directing service providers to support stranded third-country nationals, including citizens of Papua New Guinea.

While the circumstances remain challenging, there is hope that collaborative efforts by governments and service providers will pave the way for the safe return of those affected, highlighting the resilience and solidarity among nations during difficult times.
