The United States is reaffirming its commitment to stronger economic and security ties with Pacific island nations, emphasizing a free and open region. In a recent visit to Port Moresby, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau highlighted the shift in U.S. priorities towards delivering measurable benefits for both Americans and Pacific countries. A key aspect of this renewed focus includes the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation launching a compact with Fiji and a threshold program in Tonga, moving away from traditional aid to foster trade and investment.

Landau also met with Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, underscoring the increasing scope of bilateral cooperation. Another significant development is the $95 million East Micronesia Cable project set to improve connectivity for over 100,000 people by late 2025, in collaboration with Australia and Japan. The U.S. is also exploring opportunities in satellite technologies, broadband, and critical minerals research.

A new strategic cooperation framework with Papua New Guinea aiming to bolster defense, maritime security, and digital economy initiatives is being developed. Additionally, the expansion of U.S. Coast Guard patrols, the launch of unexploded ordnance programs, and a $20 million resilience fund for Palau further demonstrate the U.S.’s long-term commitment to the region.

Health initiatives remain central, with the CDC focusing on dengue fever prevention and PEPFAR investing $27 million in HIV/AIDS efforts. Programs such as Young Pacific Leaders and Peace Corps volunteers continue to fortify community connections.

This renewed engagement comes at a critical time when geopolitical dynamics in the Pacific are evolving. By emphasizing trade, technology, and security, the U.S. aims to offer solid partnerships to counter balance the influence of other global powers. Through these initiatives, the U.S. not only reaffirms its dedication to the Pacific’s development but also strengthens ties that are anticipated to be beneficial in addressing shared challenges and achieving mutual growth.
