Fiji and Tonga are actively enhancing their economic relationship through a significant initiative aimed at bolstering trade, investment, and cooperation. The Fiji-Tonga Business Mission launched today in Nukuʻalofa, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica. The event, organized by the Tonga Chamber of Commerce, brought together business leaders and officials from both nations, highlighting their commitment to fostering long-term business ties.
Deputy Prime Minister Kamikamica emphasized Tonga’s importance as Fiji’s largest export market in the Pacific, with over $161 million in exports reported last year. He noted that this mission underscores Fiji’s potential for growth in sectors such as tourism, information communication technology (ICT), and manufacturing. Kamikamica also recognized Tonga’s natural beauty and the need for improved infrastructure to fully realize its tourism potential.
The delegation from Fiji included major companies like Punjas, Goodman Fielder, and Vinod Patel, showcasing a strong representation from the Fijian business landscape eager to engage with Tongan markets. Moreover, Kamikamica discussed Fiji’s ambition to establish itself as the region’s digital hub with support from technology partners like Google, and invited Tonga to utilize emerging undersea cable infrastructure to boost internet access.
Both nations are also united in addressing shared challenges, such as the impact of climate change and rising costs, which highlight the need for Pacific nations to collaborate effectively. This business mission symbolizes a hopeful step towards mutual economic growth and resilience in the Pacific region.
