Pacific leaders have made a critical decision to limit the involvement of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in specific discussions during their meetings. This announcement was clarified by Forum Secretary General Baron Waqa after questions arose regarding the absence of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) at a recent talanoa focused on deep-sea minerals, which was designated exclusively for leaders.

Waqa acknowledged the important contributions of CSOs but emphasized that certain discussions are best suited for government leaders alone. “This was decided by leaders last year, and the formalities were worked on,” he stated, underscoring the necessity for high-level discussions to take place in a secure setting devoid of external influences.

Deputy Secretary General Desna Solofa further elaborated that the forum values its partners’ input, but the goal is to facilitate open and honest dialogues among leaders regarding pressing issues. She reiterated the expectation for all development partners to work with the Pacific in ways that resonate with regional priorities.

This decision occurs amid growing calls from civil society organizations for greater inclusion in decision-making processes. Previous Pacific Islands Forum discussions have highlighted the urgent need to amplify community voices, especially concerning critical issues like climate change and sustainable development.

The ongoing dialogue signifies a pivotal moment for governance in the Pacific. Striking a balance between leader discussions and civil society engagement is vital for effectively addressing regional challenges. This careful approach could foster improved alignment of priorities and more cohesive actions toward a sustainable future in the Pacific.

The situation serves as an encouraging reminder that while certain discussions may be limited, the relationships developed during these critical interactions can foster meaningful partnerships, ultimately enriching governance across the Pacific region.
