Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Baron Divavesi Waqa, highlighted the region’s dedication to integrity and accountability during the 6th Teieniwa Vision Anniversary Celebration held on Wednesday. The event, themed “Teieniwa Vision at Six: Integrity, Leadership, and Resilience in the Blue Pacific,” marked a key milestone in the ongoing pursuit of good governance within the region.

In his address, Waqa expressed pride in celebrating the 6th anniversary of the Teieniwa Vision, which he described as a significant part of the region’s journey towards enhanced governance, transparency, and accountability. The vision’s symbolism, represented by the ‘sailing canoe,’ embodies both the Pacific identity and the collaborative efforts to combat corruption across the region.

Waqa noted that despite challenges such as geopolitical changes, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Blue Pacific’s governments, institutions, and communities have made significant strides in implementing the vision. He emphasized that this progress reinforces public trust and upholds the credibility of regional institutions.

The anniversary serves as a reminder of the region’s commitment to ethical leadership and corruption prevention. Waqa stated, “As we commemorate this occasion, we reaffirm our shared commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethical leadership and fostering a culture where corruption cannot take root.” This commitment is pivotal for achieving broader regional goals as outlined in the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, where integrity and accountability are fundamental to sustainable development, climate resilience, human rights, and social inclusion.

Waqa assured attendees that the Pacific Islands Forum will continue to support its member states through enhanced coordination, ongoing capacity building, and effective monitoring and reporting mechanisms. He quoted the Vision, stating, “we ‘commit to Pacific Unity Against Corruption, recognising that all of our progress and aspirations for a peaceful, harmonious and prosperous Pacific cannot be realised unless we address corruption’.” He concluded by framing the Teieniwa Vision not just as a commitment, but as a lasting covenant that propels the region toward a future characterized by integrity, unity, and hope.
