Baron Waqa, the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, has passionately appealed to Pacific ACP Leaders, highlighting the urgent challenges the region faces due to climate change, debt distress, and inadequate financing. Speaking at a recent meeting in Honiara, Waqa emphasized the need for stronger advocacy, robust institutions, and unity as the region braces itself for significant global interactions.

In a time of profound change, Waqa pointed out that over 60 developing nations, many of which are small island economies, are in or near debt distress. He noted the severe impacts of climate change on the Pacific, with natural disasters costing economies between six and nine percent of GDP each year due to cyclones, floods, and rising seas. Waqa firmly stated that climate change remains the most significant threat facing the Pacific and urged leaders to continue their climate advocacy leading up to COP30. He stressed the importance of implementing the Samoa Agreement effectively to ensure it catalyzes real change rather than being mere rhetoric.

Additionally, Waqa highlighted the strategic importance of having a Pacific representative as an Assistant Secretary-General in the OACPS Secretariat in Brussels, positioning the Pacific at the center of crucial finance and administrative decisions impacting the region. He acknowledged the European Union’s support but urged for increased financial allocations to support the Pacific’s challenges and commitments.

He emphasized the necessity of solidarity and unwavering unity among Pacific nations to enhance their influence in global negotiations and ensure that their unique needs are addressed. Waqa’s call for a united front reflects ongoing regional strategies, such as the Pacific Roadmap for Economic Development and the Climate Finance Access and Mobilisation Strategy, which aim to drive inclusive growth and resilience.

The Secretary General’s appeal echoes previous discussions and the enduring commitment of Pacific leaders to push for stronger climate and economic policies on the global stage. As the region looks forward to upcoming international forums, Waqa’s message serves as both a call to action and a beacon of hope for a more sustainable and equitable future for Pacific Island nations.
