The Pacific Islands Forum is set to hold a pre-COP leaders’ summit in 2026, as regional leaders strive to keep Pacific priorities at the forefront of global climate discussions. Secretary-General Baron Waqa emphasized this commitment during a press briefing on Wednesday, expressing both disappointment and optimism regarding the upcoming climate conference.

Waqa noted, “While we are disappointed that we will not host a Pacific COP in Australia next year, we are encouraged by Australia’s commitment to collaborate closely with Turkey, which will preside over COP31.” He highlighted the significance of the 2026 summit, stating that it represents a considerable achievement for the Pacific region and underscoring that teams are actively finalizing details for this high-level engagement.

The pre-COP summit is poised to spotlight critical issues for the Pacific, such as the connection between climate and ocean health, the concept of a just transition, and securing access to climate finance. “The Forum will remain dedicated to advocating for our regional priorities, ensuring partnership support remains aligned with these goals,” Waqa affirmed.

Regarding the summit’s timing and expected outcomes, Waqa indicated that further insights would emerge from next year’s COP31 preparations. He expressed confidence in Australia’s ability to effectively shape the agenda alongside the Pacific, advancing essential priorities.

Waqa acknowledged Australia’s ongoing support for the Pacific’s climate initiatives, even as the region lost the opportunity to host COP this time around. “We worked hard to gain confidence and have Turkey respectfully hand it over to us this time, but it wasn’t to be. We are, however, grateful that Australia has remained steadfast in supporting the Pacific,” he remarked.

More detailed information about the pre-COP summit is anticipated to be released early next year, marking a pivotal opportunity for Pacific nations to assert their influence in global climate negotiations. This proactive approach demonstrates a commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by the region, paving the way for meaningful contributions to the global climate agenda.
