Pacific Island Forum Leaders recently reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Smaller Island States (SIS) by endorsing their key priorities, such as transportation, fisheries development, health, and climate finance. Within this framework, they also aimed to propel regional digital transformation and promote sustainable aviation.
Recognizing the unique vulnerabilities and challenges faced by SIS members, Forum Leaders have integrated these priorities across all regional organizations, ensuring reliable and affordable air and sea transport, advancing fisheries involvement, enhancing health workforce mechanisms, and improving access to climate finance.
The support for SIS, which comprises nations like the Cook Islands, Nauru, and Tuvalu, extends to a comprehensive regional digital agenda. Leaders endorsed further digital development, emphasizing a collaborative approach to undersea cables, data storage, and cloud solutions. They flagged the importance of addressing the social media impact on youth as part of these digital initiatives. Additionally, a Digital Transformation Action Plan was endorsed, with particular leadership noted from Papua New Guinea.
Transport and connectivity remained pivotal areas of focus, following insights from the recent Regional Aviation Ministers Meeting. Forum Leaders called for ‘sustainable aviation connectivity’ to be integrated as a standalone agenda item, addressing the transportation needs of the region’s island states.
Previous discussions, such as those held in Suva and other regional meetings, have continually emphasized SIS priorities, reinforcing commitments to transport, fisheries, health, and climate finance. Meetings have highlighted the resilience and innovation of SIS in facing geographic and economic challenges, advocating for tailored financing and development approaches that align with the regional framework.
This renewed support highlights the Forum’s commitment to fostering unity and regional solidarity amid global challenges. The collective efforts aim to build a resilient Pacific region with a focus on sustainable development and strengthened regional cooperation to navigate future obstacles effectively. The Leaders’ expanded agenda underscores their dedication to ensuring the needs of SIS are reflected in broader regional actions, ultimately striving for prosperity and sustainable progress for all Pacific peoples.
